Understanding pre-existing disease coverage

A condition you already have needs careful discussion. It is not the same as an automatic refusal of insurance.

Check the definition

Read the current policy definition of a pre-existing disease. Ask how prior diagnoses, treatment and symptoms are considered. A disability and a medical diagnosis are not interchangeable; make sure the insurer explains which specific condition is being assessed.

Separate a wait from an exclusion

A waiting period delays an otherwise covered benefit. A permanent exclusion removes a specified risk from cover. A sub-limit restricts how much is paid. These have very different consequences even if the premium appears similar.

Continuity and policy changes

Ask what recognised continuity may apply when renewing, migrating or porting a policy. Timing, records and the insurer’s process matter. Never cancel existing cover on the assumption that a new application has been accepted; wait for written confirmation and review the terms.

Keep an accurate record

Retain the proposal form, relevant medical disclosures and insurer replies. If an assisted application is used, review the answers before submission. Ask for corrections if a representative misunderstood your condition. This reference does not determine real pre-existing condition coverage.

Questions to take with you

  • What is the exact waiting period for this condition?
  • Is there any permanent exclusion in my schedule?
  • How is previous continuous coverage considered?
