How to understand policy wording

Read a policy as a set of promises with definitions, conditions and limits. Start with a structured approach.

Use the schedule and information sheet

Identify the insured people, sum insured, policy period and any endorsements. Use the customer information sheet as a starting map, then read the complete wording. Individual terms in the schedule can be as important as standard benefits.

Follow the definitions

Terms such as hospitalization, medically necessary treatment, pre-existing disease and domiciliary care have specific policy meanings. Ordinary language can be broader than those meanings. Ask the insurer to explain confusing definitions using a relevant example.

Connect a benefit to every limit

For each benefit, note its trigger, waiting period, maximum payment, provider requirements and exclusions. Mark anything unanswered as not specified. Check whether limits apply per event, per year or across the whole family.

Keep the full record

Save the proposal, schedule, wording, endorsements and written answers together. Review changes at renewal. A comparison tool is useful for shortlisting questions; it cannot replace the insurance contract or qualified advice.

Questions to take with you

  • Is there an endorsement that changes this benefit?
  • Does this limit apply per claim or per year?
  • Can you explain this clause in plain language?
