Insurance for people with multiple disabilities

Plan around the person’s combined needs, instead of forcing them into a single category.

Create a coordinated checklist

Record hospital, outpatient, therapy, device and communication needs separately. Prioritise risks that would create the largest financial pressure. If care comes from several providers, ask which records are necessary for an assessment.

Check interactions between limits

A policy can have an overall sum insured and smaller limits for particular benefits. Ask whether rehabilitation and home care share a sub-limit, and how multiple treatments in one year would be handled. Get an example in writing.

Assistance with consent

A trusted person may help organise information. Make the applicant’s involvement explicit and check any authority required to consent on their behalf. Assistance is not a substitute for respecting communication preferences and legal capacity.

Explore official schemes

Some government-supported schemes address specified multiple-disability situations. Check the National Trust’s current criteria. Do not assume that private cover or a scheme will pay for every related condition or support service.

Questions to take with you

  • Do benefits share any combined sub-limits?
  • What documentation is actually necessary?
  • Can the applicant choose their communication support?
