Insurance for people with locomotor disabilities

Look beyond admission costs to the support that makes recovery and daily life possible.

Clarify cause and current care

Congenital and acquired conditions can raise different policy questions. Share relevant context only when requested through a secure assessment. Do not assume that a mobility aid describes your health, ability to work or support needs.

Devices and rehabilitation

Ask separately about wheelchairs, prostheses, orthoses, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. A policy might cover a device only after a specified covered event, with a sub-limit. Routine repair and replacement may have no listed benefit.

Hospital and home access

Confirm whether the hospital can meet your access requirements. Insurance network membership does not guarantee accessible premises or suitable rehabilitation services. Home healthcare may require medical prescription and specific qualifying conditions.

Accident benefit definitions

A personal accident policy usually concerns specified accidental events. Ask how a new event affecting an existing impairment would be considered. Do not equate accident disability benefits with coverage for all existing disability-related expenses.

Questions to take with you

  • What triggers the rehabilitation benefit?
  • Are device replacements included?
  • How is a new accident-related loss defined?
