Equality and access
The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 provides an equality and non-discrimination framework. It also addresses accessibility and government insurance schemes. These provisions should not be read as a guarantee that every private insurance proposal will be accepted or every disability-related expense paid.
Available products and individual assessment
IRDAI has issued directions on products for persons with disabilities, people with HIV/AIDS and people with mental illness. Its health insurance department explains the relevant circulars and broader product-choice requirements. Availability of a product and acceptance of a particular application are different questions. Request current policy wording and a written explanation of terms.
Make the process accessible
Tell the insurer the format or assistance you need: readable documents, written communication, a support person, or an accessible application process. Keep copies of your requests and replies. A support person can help you understand information while your decisions and consent remain central.
If something goes wrong
Raise the issue with the insurer’s grievance officer and retain your complaint number. You can check IRDAI’s Bima Bharosa process and the Insurance Ombudsman route. Their procedures and jurisdiction matter; a complaint does not guarantee a particular outcome.
Questions to take with you
- Can you provide accessible policy documents?
- Which published underwriting criteria apply to my proposal?
- Can I receive the decision and its reasons in writing?
